The Great Reconciliation Between Jew and Gentile in the New Testament



If there is one subject that the COG's have absolutely failed to teach their congregants properly is the great reconciliation that shocked the Church in the New Testament in the book of Acts.

Of course, it was the Church's beliefs on the differences between Jew vs. Gentile and who compromised "Spiritual Jews" or "Spiritual Israelites" that literally muddied the waters when it came to just how huge of a big deal it was back in the days of the beginning of the Christian Church at and shortly after Pentecost.

In the Worldwide Church of God's alternative facts, the story-line was completely different. Jesus came not for the world, but for a select few called "the Church". The "Gentile" line went off the deep end, ignored the "true" Gospel, which, according to Armstrongism, laid dormant and powerless for centuries - save for an infinitesimally small group of observant Christians who kept the Jewish Law throughout six different eras - up to the "Philadelphia" era which, of course, was started, and ended, with Herbert Armstrong.

What this different chronology does is shocking to the standards of orthodox Christianity, the work of the Spirit, the inclusion of the Gentiles, the lessons of Acts, the epistles of Paul, and actually, the entire framework and network of the New Testament. That framework being the freedom in Christ with the inclusion of the Gentiles into the Church that came with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.

We pick up the story at Acts 15: (NIV) (emphasis in bold mine) (my inserted comment in brown)

15 Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved. 2 This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute (AHA! Well, this wasn't expected at all, was it?) and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question.

Let me interject here what it must have been like at this point. Paul and Barnabas were at "Sharp Dispute". I bet you hands were flying and spit was being spat, and they obviously did not come to a solution or a conclusion - both held their ground. The only thing to do was for them both to be sent up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and the elders to talk about what to do. I can imagine that both were absolutely and completely set in their ways (What else is new?? This was a prospect of huge change, great for Paul, nightmarish for Barnabas!) BUT - they both could not deny the fact that the Gentiles had been converted. And for them, this was a Game-Changer - a Very Big Deal.

The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the believers very glad. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them.

Until a section of believers felt that the Gentiles must now become Jews in practice: 
Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.The apostles and elders met to consider this question. 7 After much discussion, (something tells me that this was a major understatement!!) Peter (NOT Paul, NOT Barnabas, but Peter!!!) got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith. 10 Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? 11 No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”

Shocking words!! Just look at the first four words in the next verse: 
12 The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them. 13 When they finished, James spoke up. “Brothers,” he said, “listen to me. 14 Simon[a] has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles. 15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:
16 “‘After this I will return
    and rebuild David’s fallen tent.
Its ruins I will rebuild,
    and I will restore it,
17 that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord,
    even all the Gentiles who bear my name,

says the Lord, who does these things’[b]
18     things known from long ago.[c]
19 “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. 20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. 21 For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”

I think it's good to point out here that you can definitely see the difference of opinions that are existing within the different personalities at this point. We have Paul, who is championing Grace and Freedom for the Gentiles. We have Peter, who is adamant that placing the Law of the Gentiles would be too much for them to bear and that salvation is by Grace through Faith.  We have Barnabas, who is championing the Law of Moses and Circumcision for the Gentiles. We also have James, who seems to be thinking that eventually, they'll come around to the law of Moses. Oh no, it's a split decision! It's sometimes difficult to see the human reasoning within scripture, but we have to remember, these were humans - men - just like us - with thought and reason and rationale just like what happens when a group of us get together.  What then was the end result? We read it in verse 22.

The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers

22 Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were leaders among the believers. 23 With them they sent the following letter:
The apostles and elders, your brothers,
To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia:
Greetings.
24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul (THIS IS SIGNIFICANT, since both had very divergent opinions!!) 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things.
Farewell.
30 So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. 31 The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message. 32 Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. 33 After spending some time there, they were sent off by the believers with the blessing of peace to return to those who had sent them. [34] [d] 35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached the word of the Lord.

That wasn't the end of the disagreements between Paul and Barnabas - two totally different opinions on Law and Grace and Church Administration, the Law of Moses and the Gentiles. Look what happened in verse 36:

Disagreement Between Paul and Barnabas

36 Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.” 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, 38 but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord. 41 He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
It doesn't take a lot to see that there were hard feelings between the two who had completely different opinions on the path that they thought the two were supposed to take. Doesn't this all sound familiar? A huge shift had just happened within the Church. The Gentiles were included as believers without the inclusions of circumcision and the observances of the Law of Moses.

It is with this perspective that one must read the Pauline Epistles, as Paul went from church to church writing the congregations trying to explain to those who sided with Barnabas' opinion about Law about why the Law existed, what it was for, what it did, and the new way of faith in Christ and Christ in you in such books as Galatians. It is with this background that one can understand why Paul wrote exactly what he wrote, and went into such lengths and details about such issues - because he was dealing with people who could not accept the decisions of the Jerusalem Council, and that the Gentiles were not subject to the same yoke that they spent their whole lives observing. This did not change the fact that the decision was done and the Gentile Church WAS the Church - even though they did things and observed things differently. 

And here is where Herbert Armstrong could not reconcile that the Gentile Church was as much a part of the Church as the Jewish Christians were, 1900 and some years later. Instead, Herbert Armstrong condemned the Gentile Church as a wayward, backwards, pagan people who did not operate on faith but had become absorbed in apostasy. His mindframe was that the Gentile Church must act as the Jewish Church acted in the first Century - as the earliest Christians had to act. His mindframe was that the Gentile Church had to be subject to the Law of Moses. In short, Herbert Armstrong defied the authority and judgement of the Jerusalem Council of Acts 15 and made the unilateral decision that the Gentile Church WAS bound to observe the Law of Moses and even circumcision. Herbert Armstrong was in rebellion to Paul, to Peter, and to the entire Jerusalem Council. Herbert Armstrong sided with Barnabas, and put a yoke on Gentile Christians that was too hard of a yoke to bear and distracted them from grace and faith in Christ. THIS is the reality of what happened, and this is the reality of where Herbert stood in relation to the authority of which the Council's decision was made.

In fact, Herbert Armstrong was rebellious to anybody who made a decision that was different than he thought. It didn't matter if it was Peter, or Paul, or Herb's own ministers, or Herb's church before he started his own. Herb had no respect for the Church, for the Decisions of the Council, for the Gentiles, and the list goes on and on. The reality is that what was in Herb's mind was a methodology to use religion - specifically taking the position of Barnabas - to attempt to revive the inclusions that had been outlawed by the council upon the Gentiles for his own personal benefit and gain. Such actions were mutinous, disrespectful, and against the very Spirit who inspired the decisions of the council in the first place.

Just because the Gentiles did things differently did not eliminate, and does not eliminate their faith and their belief in Jesus Christ and does not eliminate their prospects for salvation nor their inclusion into the Church of God. This is the hardest pill for the Churches of God to swallow - and it all stems from the great reconciliation and acceptance of the Gentiles by God in the Spirit at the day of Pentecost.

Will the Church of God recognize the decisions of the Church of God made at the Jerusalem Council? Will the Church of God accept the decisions of Peter, Paul, and all the Apostles? Will the Church of God stop trying to imposing yokes and burdens on the Gentiles that are too hard and cumbersome for them? Will Thiel and Malm and others take the decisions of the Jerusalem council and humble themselves and obey their spiritual authorities and stop imposing Jewish Law on Gentile Christians and creating more hardship than they can bear distracting them from CHRIST?

The Voice



A Few of my very earliest memories was that of what transpired at the Feast of Tabernacles - when I, as a toddler, had my very own luxurious space during the Feast of Tabernacles - on a cold, cement floor surrounded by legs, shoes, and the bottom elements of grey folding metal chairs. Yet these physical elements were not the substance of my memories. The substance of the memories was a booming, authoritative, and strongly echoing voice that filled not only the Tabernacle - or metal warehouse - that I, along with 14,000 others, were inhabiting for hours per day for eight total days in that Fall. It was that voice that I remember most clearly.

It was that voice - the live, and deep bass voice - of Herbert W. Armstrong - that penetrated my head with the force of a clap of thunder and the peal of an angry drill sergeant. Sleeping was a necessity for a person of my age at that time - two, three, or even four years of age. Sleep, however, in the audio presence of a certain Herb was not as the effect of Chamomile. No, sleep was not to be had when you were a baby in the Worldwide Church of God when Herbert Armstrong was speaking. For the very moment that you began to be lulled by a more distant rumble - a strike of lightning would punctuate the Arena - activating the emergency wails of miniature alarms no greater than 20 pounds in weight and 2 feet in height. Also activated were the transporter units of mothers who would take these tiny alarms and rush them to the silencing room, as distractions were frowned upon - and that's putting it mildly.



Herbert Armstrong to the youngest of the Armstrong Era alive to remember it was not the Apostle. He was not the gentle grandfather. He wasn't even "nice" in the memories of us. Herbert was a force. A power - not benevolent in appearance, but violent and fierce. A malevolent being that could change from light to dark in the flash of a heartbeat.

I remember as a child looking up at Herbert on the Big Screen at those Feast of Tabernacles. Literally - I had to look up and between heads and shoulders when I was standing up on a seat and not trying to sleep on blankets, cradled with an Etch-A-Sketch and a "Little Professor". I remember his animatd motions. His lean in the chair. And the one time I did what I wasn't supposed to do - I laughed at him when he knocked a lamp over with his dramatic and far flung hand gestures. I didn't look up to him - now in a more emotional sense - as a religious figure. I looked up to Herbert Armstrong as someone to be very, very afraid of.

That element of fear - a pervasive, far-reaching element - was an emotion that Herbert Armstrong crafted to a science for not only those of us who were babies within the Church, but for all who were a part of the brief, yet powerful, movement - for those of us who were seduced into it. That element of fear was in the single man and woman being told how their marriage would be arranged. That element was in the baptized member afraid to upset the minister for fear he or she would be disfellowshipped for trivial mutiny. That element was in the father and husband who was just told to quit his job because it violated either Church rules or the minister's order. That element was in the wife who was told to submit to the husband, the minister, and every command of the Church. That element of fear was something that we simply called "Submission to Government". It was a part of our culture, ingrained into us from day one of Herbert's regime pounded into our psychological crevices, cemented by threats of eternal damnation should we rebel, and use common sense or critical thinking. That element of fear was called "Unity". That element of fear was called "order". Those not submissive to such unity and order were the "World" - and the "World" was what you did not want to be a part of, because then you were, you were told, subject to great loss - and great affliction from physical and spiritual forces. The element of fear is what held you in. It encapsulated, suffocated, and paralyzed you - yet was calming and familiar enough to lull you into a sense of security. Reality became unknown, traded for the narrow and false visions of lies and deceit from one man who convinced you he was sent by God to take you where no man had gone in 1900 years - to truth. Except every aspect of Herbert's ministry was founded on lie, after lie, after lie.

It has been a long time since those days of sitting on the cold, gray, unfeeling cement floors of those warehouse buildings used as Tabernacles. A few of those buildings still exist, such as at Wisconsin Dells, Lake of the Ozarks, and Big Sandy. Time, however has changed those buildings, and time has changed those who used to fill it's cavernous coldness (in some cases, literal coldness!). The Ozarks building only houses boats now. The Wisconsin Dells building belongs to another group altogether, as does the Big Sandy Tabernacle. And for most of us who grew up under the shadow of an abusive, dominating, greed-filled bully - there is no longer any reason to fear him or Armstrongism in general. For the movement that created such fear has fizzled out in a most spectacular dud you could ever imagine.

That voice? That resonant, powerful voice? Silent. Yet the voice that continues to persist and penetrate - that Voice - the voice that says, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life". That Voice that says "For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." That Voice that says  "I am the Resurrection and the Life." That Voice that is gentle as a whisper and timeless as the Alpha and Omega. That Voice that searches our hearts and minds. That voice of Truth - yes, that Voice remains, and has remained from the Time of His Birth, to now, and to forevermore. He was never silenced. He was always there. That's the Voice. That's the One. That's the Truth. He's the Wonderful Counselor, the Prince of Peace, the Everlasting Father. And HE - Jesus - is far more powerful than that other voice of lies that came, spoke, and has been silenced so we could finally hear and know The Voice of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Short Story: The Prayer.

It was a moment he had prepared his entire life for. A moment greater than High School Graduation. A moment greater than his first kiss. Yes, a moment even greater than his wedding day. A moment even greater than the consummation of his marriage that night. Yes, it was The Moment. The moment he had been waiting for his entire life. The moment.....

He got to stand for the first time Behind The Lectern.

He remembered when he was little how he was never allowed on the stage, nevertheless near that beautiful walnut-stained solid wood Lectern with the Adjustable Microphone and Most Holy Seal on the front displaying the ever-awesome Seal of the Church, signifying the God-Ordained Official role of the blessed or doubly blessed servant that was fortunate enough to stand behind the Edifice of the Local Congregation of the One and Only Truest Church. He remembered watching how people would walk up to the Edifice – how they bent their knees. How they turned and looked. How they placed their stacks of papers or their Bible. The way they placed one hand on one side, or their other hand on the other side. Or both hands on both sides, stretching his suit way out about to rip at the seams, it seemed. After all, it was an Ordained Position to Position yourself Properly at THE Ordained Position behind the Edifice.

Yes, he remembered every occasion, week after week. And now, for the first time, he was asked to stand behind this Lectern himself. To give the most humble of all tasks. The Opening Prayer.

What an honor. What a privilege this was. He'd heard the Opening Prayer a thousand times, if not tens of thousands of times, or so it seemed. He heard the good ones, and he cringed at the bad ones. He remembered solemnly the one-hit wonders, who would give a Sermonette instead of a Prayer, never to return behind the Edifice again. He remembered the passionate prayers, the boring prayers, the suck-up-to-the-Pastor Prayers, and the “Quick, I'm Hungry, Let's Eat” closing prayers. He just had to nail the Approved Style to get it right, so he could possibly do it again. Maybe, just maybe, if he did it right, he could get up there not just to pray, but to chicken flap his way through all the songs he knew since birth.

He though about how he'd do it. “Our Father..” No, too bland. “Eternal, Heavenly Father”... no, everyone does it that way. “Our Most Gracious, Eternal, Heavenly Father...” No, too much for the first one. “Father in Heaven”... yeah, that'll work. Not too little, not too much. “We just...” We just. No, too bland. “We come before you on this..” YES. Now we're getting what we need to do, he thought. “Beautiful Sabbath Day?” Wait, what if it's raining? It's not beautiful then! “Wonderful Sabbath Day...” That's better... but what if it wasn't wonderful. “We come before you on this Sabbath Day, we thank you..” He was getting the groove of what he had heard for years upon years.

“Let's See..” he thought... “Bless the pastor, inspire the speaker...that you would bless the words...inspire the thoughts....that many would have ears to hear...” Yes, he liked that. “Bless the entire service...and we ask this all in the name of Christ, Amen”... Yeah, something like that. Gulp. Now. Presentation, he thought.

He walked up to the mirror. Cleared his throat. And with as low of a voice as possible, he growled... “ETERNAL..” No, no, no, he thought. He tried a higher voice. “Eternal...” NO, that's too Kermit THEE Froggish. Just be natural, he thought. For the first time, he felt the sweat drip from his brow. SO much to this, he thought! “How should I stand? Oh, don't worry about it”, he thought, everyone will be


looking down, anyway. But what if they don't? What if they stare at me? What if they see how nervous I really am? What if I bomb? WHAT IF I TOTALLY SCREW THIS UP? WHAT IF I.... WHAT IF I..... WHAT IF I BONK MY NOSE ON THE MICROPHONE? OHH THE HUMANITY!!!”

He went to the fridge and pulled out the scotch and took a guzzle of it, and tried to relax. It'll be okay. After thirty seconds, it will be over. But will it meet the approval of The Minister – or will he be black-listed forever???

Finally, it was THE DAY. 

It was the longest drive. Every mile seemed like an eternity, driving down the highway, hearing the pavement thumping and the tires singing underneath the wheels of his station wagon. 

"You'll do fine, honey. Stop worrying about it!", his wife said, trying to encourage him. 

"Yeah, daddy, I can't wait to hear your voice through the loudspeakers!" One of his pre-school age children said. Of course, this did little to relieve the anxiety. He gripped the steering wheel a little tighter. 

Finally, he saw the outline of the old abandoned school where they met for services approaching. As he turned the corner, he could see two well-dressed men chit-chatting next to the doors that led to the ramshackled meeting hall in the gymnasium of that school. He slowly turned into a parking spot, and stopped the car. He glanced into the rearview mirror and with a dart of his eyes caught the assuring smile of his youngest child. His wife patted him on the thigh, saying "Go Do That Prayer." 

Slowly, he got out of the car, went to the trunk and grabbed his Bible and Notebook. He caught up to his wife and the two children were walking behind. He turned around and with anxiety said, "Now you two be on your BEST behavior today. This is an important day for Daddy." 

"We will!", they said, then ran into the hall nearly setting the balance off from one of the Greeters. 

"Good Morning!", one of the greeters said, extending a firm, masculine handshake. 

"Morning, beautiful weather", he nervously replied. He walked into the hall where another well-dressed man gave him a hymnal and a Bulletin - and an equally firm handshake. 

"Good Morning!", he to the Hymnal Guy. 

"Hey, Buddy, I heard today you're going to give the opening prayer. Don't worry about it, you'll do fine." 

Gulp. 

He could feel the sweat running down his brow onto his cheek. He nervously glanced around looking to see if the Song Leader had arrived. Maybe he isn't here, he thought. Maybe, just maybe there will be another song leader and another Prayer giver! Alas, however, he could see that the Song Leader was already talking with the Pianist about the hymns. He decided to sit down. Actually, he felt he needed to sit down. He chose an aisle seat close to the front of the hall, as was the tradition. 

The hall was filling up now, as the Murmor of  hundreds of voices was getting louder and louder. As he looked up, he could see the Song Leader check his watch and say a quick word to the Pianist. The Song Leader then ambled over to the Lectern, flipped a couple pages, and pulled out a small long card and placed it on the Lectern. He glanced up, smiled, and adjusted the Microphone perched on a boom stand in front of the Lectern. 

"May I Have your Attention, please. Will you all please begin finding your seats, services will begin in three minutes." And at once, the Pianist began plinking and planking away at a familiar tune "O Come and Let Us Worship Him." 

Everyone began finding their seats, adjusting baby stuff, setting down hymnals, or just sitting. Soon, every seat save a few were full. The Song Leader was chit chatting with the still-playing pianist, and the small handful of choir members assembled on stage. Finally, the Pianist stopped and looked at the Song Leader, perched with both hands on the lectern. 

"Well a Pleasant Sabbath Morning to all of You!" - he paused and slowly looked around the room. 

"Beautiful Weather we're having today, in fact, a glorious day to sing songs to God, so let's all RISE" - his hands palm up swooped in a rising gesture - "And turn in your hymnals to page 75. Holy Mighty Majesty. Page 75." 

The Introduction rang out and soon off and singing, but so did the rising anxiety increasing like a pressure cooker deep within. 

"Worship and exalt, The Eternal One, Holy Mighty Majesty!" - the last of the three verses ended. 

"Beautiful beginning! Now let's turn in our hymnals to..'

The voice faded out as he went on autopilot, turned to the song, and sang, mind racing. And then, the last song. Here's where he knew he had to begin his Walk of Fame. 

As the very third verse of the last song began, he slowly closed his hymnal, and his lead-weighted feet slowly moved out to the aisle. He glanced nervously to his wife. She nodded and smiled. He turned and walked up the steps, and, as so many did before him, paused right between the piano player and the song leader, furiously flapping his arms away with what seemed to be complete ease and grace. 

"So it is seemly so to do..." 

Almost time...

"And shall from age to Age enduuuure." 

Gulp. 

"Our opening prayer this morning will be given by a member here...."

The song leader stepped away from the lectern, three steps backward, and looked at him, and nodded. 

Dead silence in the room. A quick glance at the audience showed bowing heads - except a few staring right. at. him. every step toward the Lectern sounded like cannons going off. 

Clunk. Clank. Clunk. 

And there it was. The Lectern, in front of him, in all of its magnificence. Instinctively, he cleared his throat, but taken aback the microphone picked it up as it echoed throughout the entire hall.  He opened his mouth to talk, but nothing came out. He bowed lower, and almost ate the microphone. PANIC! 

Relax. Just pray. Do it right. You know the drill, he thought. 

"............."

"come on man, go...pray", he thought. 

"......................"

And finally, after hearing these prayers all of his life, he was able to recite the prayer word for word. 

"Eternal Heavenly....come before you...this Sabbath....grateful...we just pray.....bless the speaker....let us hear the words....we commit this service into your hands......Amen..."

He was so relieved after he said "Amen" that he didn't even think, he just blurted:

"I DID IT"!!!!!

Everyone laughed. Well, most everyone. A few higher profile individuals didn't find that so funny. A perfect prayer with a not so perfect ending. He did do it. He finally was able to give the Opening Prayer in a real, live, Church Service. And as he walked down the stairs, for the first time, he realized how soaked with sweat he was. 

He was SO thankful he had to wear his suit jacket. Though the rest of the service was unbearable. 

After all, Go Ye Deodorant into All The Church was a good motto to live by.

If You are Traumatized, You Can't Just Let it Go.

One of the admins over on Banned posted a post on the blog over there called "2019, rise above your darkness, let it go". Though the essential message was well-meaning, and some of the elements had good intentions, the three words that are the most ineffective and invalidating to a survivor of a traumatic experience, whether emotional or physical, are "Let It Go".

Even for Christians.

Perhaps many remember the namesake song from the movie "Frozen". It's a nice concept. It's a beautiful concept. It seems so easy, doesn't it? Now I'm not saying that Jesus doesn't have the power, or his followers don't have the faith for a supernatural miracle of deliverance from all of the effects of trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, negative thoughts, and all of the associated emotional damage which is associated with the deep indoctrinations and damage from a severe cult experience. Yet this path may in fact, be detrimental for those who could gain much needed life-skills, coping skills, thought-skills, and life management skills for those who have been victimized by the charlatans and greedy wolves who take advantage and emotionally molest those who put their trust within them. These skills are best obtained by doing the one thing that cults hate their victims to do: Seek the help of professional counselors and services.

The skills that I have learned through over four years of professional therapy have taught me things that I never, ever were taught or understood within the confined, walled-in kingdom of Herbert-Armstrong. I never understood how cults damage and rewire the brain the way they do. I never understood the massive effects that their brainwashing, indoctrination, propaganda, and negativity caused in upsetting the logic vs. emotional balance of the mind. I never learned the concept of mindfulness, or the meaningful brain-healing of meditation and loving-kindness. I consider the things I have learned, and have been taught as absolutely life-saving and priceless beyond words.I am learning the skills to handle major depression and severe anxiety. It is an ongoing, critical process - especially when balancing these issues with a severe heart condition (which, by the way, could have been managed much, much earlier had Herbert Armstrong not got his nose into other people's lives due to greed and the love of money and power). It is a process that would not have been possible had I not received professional help. The truth is, if I had not received professional help, I would not have known HOW to BEGIN the process of overcoming, and managing the effects of Armstrongism in my life. The truth is, at this time, I would have been dead.

It would be easy for Jesus to supernaturally wave his Hands and "Poof"! Everything's gone and healed and it's all okay now, and life goes on. It would be a miracle, absolutely! It would be spectacular! Until the person - who has not learned any new life skills - or gained new insights or knowledge - gets - through his or her own deficiencies - into situations - has a whole new set of problems and begs for healing again. And what has truly, in the long run, been accomplished? Jesus can do things miraculously. Yet often, he brings us to a path to take advantage of learning, of growing - to eliminate the root causes that cause the peripheral issues in the first place.

It reminds me of all of the Christians who seek a sign, or a miraculous intervention, or a powerful healing - and then don't receive it - and miss out on a God-ordained way that is better and wiser than some miraculous intervention. See, God COULD have abruptly healed me. He could have taken away my heart condition before it nearly led to my early death. He could have fixed my anxiety issues without any problem! Sure, He could have - in a second! Yet, if he did - I would not have learned. I would not have grown. I would not have built character, or learned skills never taught to most until they "have" to know them. I would never have been given the incredible network of heart doctors and cult-recovery professionals I have now.

Because of the path Jesus led me on beyond a supernatural manifestation of electrifying power from the Higher Dimensions, I am alive, and I am growing. Jesus' ways are higher in so many ways than ours. There are sometimes better ways, in the long run, then "Poof, You're healed". Many times, the higher way is in wisdom and in understanding and experience.

No, for many, you can't just "let it go". There is a class of people who think they've let it go - but have not dealt with the underlying issues that are the more serious problems from trauma and pain, and hurt. These people think they've let it go - but haven't. They've buried their pain deep within, unwilling to bring it out, to work it out, and to learn and to grow. They're hurting themselves by their lack of getting help.

For those who truly have "let it go", consider it a blessing, and perhaps a miracle, and be thankful you have the strength to do so. For those who think they have, but deep down know they haven't - or those who KNOW they haven't. Get help. It's okay to admit you need help, and to get help. You will learn invaluable things, you will grow - and maybe, just maybe - that could be God's will for your life.

So if you're a Christian, and these words have touched you somehow, may I make a recommendation?

Please pray about it. Seek the will of the Father. Ask Jesus to take control and if it is his will for you to go the path of seeking help - that He would guide and lead and take control and charge of your life. And trust Him. The path may be long, and the journey may he hard. But you will be forever grafeful for the lifelong benefits - and wisdom - you will have attained.

May your journey to recovery be full of grace and healing.

Ephesians 3, Armstrongism Revised Version

For the Sake of Making a Point, I present to you what is NOT the Word of God, the fully edited Armstrongism Revised Version (written by me, it doesn't exist!) of Ephesians 3, to illustrate the point of how much the Church changed even one chapter of one book of the New Testament, to support their belief system.


For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles establishing the Church
Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace Law that was given to me for you, that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ magnification of the Law, which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. This mystery is that through the gospel Obedience of the Law and the Sabbath and Holy Days the Gentiles are heirs together with British Isrealites are Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together The only true heirs in the promise in Christ Jesus.
I became a servant of this gospel the Magnification of the Law by the gift of God’s grace obedience to the Law given me through the working of his power. Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles Church the boundless riches of Christ, need for obedience to the Government of God and His Law, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery the Government of God, the Kingdom, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things, and will still be hidden to virtually the whole world. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, Herbert Armstrong and his church 11 according to his eternal purpose that he  will accomplished  accomplish in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Master Plan of redemption.12 In him and through faith in him By obedience to the Law and our submission to the Government of God as members of the Church we may approach God with freedom and confidence. 13 I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

A Prayer for the Ephesians

14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ you may may dwell in your hearts qualify  through faith obedience to the Law. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love the Law, 18 may have power under God's Government, together with all the Lord’s holy people members of the Church, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, important it is that you qualify and are obedient, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge obedience to God's Government —that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, how much we support Herbert Armstrong, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus the Work throughout all generations this end time, for ever and ever! Until World War III! Amen.

Dating In Armstrongism

Dating was one of the most complicated and most watched activities within the church, as the church was attempting to control the morality of it's members (and, it could be argued, maintain massive immorality in it's ministers at the same time, though this was not always the case with all ministers.) There were many very complex do's and dont's among the single and teen dating scenes that dictated exactly what you were going to do, with who, and how it was to be done. Along with these were a strong list of exactly what you were NOT going to do – that is – if you wanted a good chance of staying in the church, for those who cared.

Take kissing, for example. 

Was this even acceptable when dating within the Church?
 

Kissing was considered something to wait for until marriage vows were traded among a couple. Many did not, but there were just as many rebels as there were followers. Physical contact while dating was considered completely tabboo, and kissing was a small part of this. The fear was that if a couple started kissing, it could lead to uncontrollable attraction, foreplay, and ultimately pre-marital intercourse. Therefore, to attempt to stop this from happening, kissing itself was forbidden among dating couples. How often this was ignored by dating couples, outside of prying eyes of watching ministers and parents, however, was anyone's guess.

Speaking of “Prying Eyes”, it wasn't uncommon for the ministers to either spy themselves, or set up spies in the church for the purpose of trying to catch somebody “in the act” of breaking one of the church's laws on morality and infidelity. Even so, there were those who were just plain unliked in the church, and it wouldn't be a stretch to report a complete fib just to get someone in trouble – especially if they were trying to break up a couple they thought should not be a couple, or a friendship, or anybody they didn't agree with should be talking with each other. This was commonly done in the church. 

This happened more often then Kermit Nelson wanted to know at SEP.
 

There were usually two groups of teenage kids in my local congregation: I called them The Rebels, and the Losers. Since I was undoubtedly a part of the “losers”, partly because I wanted to follow the Church's version of what was right, this was not an issue for me. However, I did walk in on a few of the “rebels” - and of all places, this was at the Summer Educational Program. You either were against the church's teachings due to hormones, and indulged in “rebellious” behavior, or you were for the church, and relegated a “loser” no matter how innocent and naïve you were. Regardless of either class you were in, you were an outcast to the world through and through – unless you completely “rebelled” and became a part of what was termed “The New Morality”. 

This would get you kicked out of everything!!!


Petting and Necking – admittedly a stage beyond just “kissing” - in the church, was considered sexual foreplay and was forbidden among dating single individuals. Couples were supposed to wait until marriage to perform forbidden acts such as listed here. Dating was strictly controlled and in some cases, date results were to be reported to the minister to see how it went. Just like with kissing, Once petting and necking began, it was thought that they were already well on their way toward pre-marital intercourse. This was, after all, considered fornication. If dating included petting and necking while the members were in the church, that couple was separated by the ministry – at the LEAST. At most, you were told you were setting a bad example, and couldn't return until you 'repented'. 




Another thing – interracial dating of any kind was forbidden in the church. If you were white, you dated a white person – not olive, not hispanic – not latino – white, and the same exact policy with other races in the church. You didn't do it. Racism was rampant in the church based on their interpretation of scriptures and bible prophecy. Whole congregations at one time of color were segregated. This is just the way it was.

Who you dated was controlled by the minister or your parents – and you did what they told you to do. If they wanted you with a person, you obeyed. If you were a teenager, if they wanted you to double-date for a period of time, you did. If they did not want you with a person, you broke up. You did, again, what you were told. If they thought you were compatible, you were compatible – even if you were most obviously not compatible. You simply accepted and “worked through” the trial that was to last your whole life, because this was “God's will”. Regardless of the strange pool of “weirdness” in the church that made dating extremely unattractive for many, you didn't think of dating someone outside of the church – they were unconverted, it was told, and could well become a bad influence in your life. Therefore, if you “liked” someone who was out of the church, you were to – well, “un-like” them – they wouldn't understand you, and you would be too tempted by them. It was called, in church speak, being “unequally yoked” - just like a married couple where one is in the church, and one is out of the church.

With that said, The thought of dating outside of the church – to those who wanted to follow the church's teachings, and were old enough – was unheard of. Any potential mate was only, and I mean ONLY – found within the church. The problem with this is that those within the church were, unwittingly and unknowingly, just as messed up as you were, and any prospective suitor knew you were messed up too. Yet dating outside of the church was not an option, so, regardless of what a couple might say, most church couples, anxious to get married to escape the soon coming Tribulation, they thought, married anyway and settled with what they got.

The thought of dating outside of the church – to those who wanted to follow the church's teachings – was unheard of. Any potential mate was only, and I mean ONLY – found within the church. The problem with this is that those within the church were, unwittingly and unknowingly, just as messed up as you were, and any prospective suitor knew you were messed up too. Yet dating outside of the church was not an option, so, regardless of what a couple might say, most church couples, anxious to get married to escape the soon coming Tribulation, they thought, married anyway and settled with what they got. A truly tragic thing for many of the couples who were entangled in the dating snare of Armstrongism.

And don't hold hands. 

 

Herbert Armstrong: A Classic Case of Narcisistic Personality Disorder


Herbert W. Armstrong was a Narcissist.

This has been discussed on many COG-related blogs and websites over the past twenty years. This site shall be no exception.

The Churches of God have enabled and fueled Narcissists for the entirety of their70+ years of existence, claiming and deceiving the grandiose delusions that they and they alone were the only ones God was calling and working with out of the billions of people on the Earth today. Not many were as thoroughly narcissistic, though, as the businessman, Herbert Armstrong - who displayed, without any doubt and with thorough verification and confirmation - every aspect of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

From Wikipedia: 

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder with a long-term pattern of abnormal behavior characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance, excessive need for admiration, and a lack of empathy.[2][3] Those affected often spend a lot of time thinking about achieving power or success, or on their appearance.[3] They often take advantage of the people around them.[3] The behavior typically begins by early adulthood, and occurs across a variety of social situations.[3]


The DSM-5 indicates that persons with NPD usually display some or all of the following symptoms, typically without the commensurate qualities or accomplishments:[6][9]

  1. Grandiosity with expectations of superior treatment from other people
  2. Fixated on fantasies of power, success, intelligence, attractiveness, etc.
  3. Self-perception of being unique, superior, and associated with high-status people and institutions
  4. Needing continual admiration from others
  5. Sense of entitlement to special treatment and to obedience from others
There were constant Pastor General Report mailings to ministers absolutely filled with ministers heaping on the praises and lavish endorsements of HWA, each fueling and enabling the narcissistic behavior of HWA on every level, causing him to believe his grandiose fantasies as reality. HWA had the self-perception of being not only unique, but the only "apostle" on the face of the Earth at that period of time. He considered himself fully superior to all other ministers and members of the Church, and to all humanity who was not being "called by God" at the time. And, Herbert constantly, from age 16 onward, enjoyed and was motivated to spend time and be like high-status "important" people as well as institutions. His expectations of superior treatment ranged from constant complaining about the size of his office to the "quality" he constantly expected and demanded from others and for himself. He also felt needy for special treatment - and he absolutely and unquestionably demanded obedience from all people under his "authority" as Pastor General of the Worldwide Church of God. 

Another proof of NPD was exploitation.
  1. Exploitative of others to achieve personal gain
  2. Unwilling to empathize with the feelings, wishes, and needs of other people.
 
  Exploit means to derive full use and benefit from a source. 

An example of Herbert's exploitation of his members of his church was to drain out and squeeze every ounce of income he could from them - without care or without concern about their personal struggles, instead shifting the responsibility to God to take care of them because they were obedient to HWA - or as he called it "The Government of God".

He would demand First Tithe, Second Tithe, Third Tithe, Regular Holy Day offerings, Building Fund Offerings, Local Church Activity Fundraisers, Additional Contributions and Donations as required from the members - and plead, beg, threaten and gravel for increased Co-Worker contributions pleading every possible crisis and emergency that could possibly exist to increase his funds large enough to complete his Master Plan. This fulfilled the very definition of exploitation.



  • Intensely envious of others, and the belief that others are equally envious of them
Herbert would continually watched other evangelists/"competition" and compared himself to them (Oral Roberts, Billy Graham), often criticizing their methodologies of their crusades and large-scale evangelistic events. He fit both categories of the above statement perfectly - envious of them, and believing they were envious of his accomplishments. His boasting over ratings - beating Oral Roberts - was extreme, as can be noted in sermons he would give in the 1950s. 
  • Pompous and arrogant demeanor
Herbert often referred to himself as The Apostle, The Head under Jesus Christ, and many other titles and descriptions.He would also refer to himself in the third person - or sign his name to third person attributions written by others.



People with NPD tend to exaggerate their skills, accomplishments, and their level of intimacy with people they consider high-status.

From the very early years, he would often brag of his associations with the famous and the fortunate - such as Hubbard, oil executives - using his job in the Trade Journal meeting with Chief Executive Officers to boost and boast his accomplishments with millionaires and successful people - taking notes of how they did what they did as he went on.

When their own ego is wounded by a real or perceived criticism, their anger can be disproportionate to the situation.

To the extent that people are pathologically narcissistic, they can be controlling, blaming, self-absorbed, intolerant of others' views, unaware of others' needs and the effects of their behavior on others, and insist that others see them as they wish to be seen.

Since the fragile ego of individuals with NPD is hypersensitive to perceived criticism or defeat, they are prone to feelings of shame, humiliation, and worthlessness over minor or even imagined incidents.

They usually mask these feelings from others with feigned humility or by isolating themselves socially, or they may react with outbursts of rage, defiance, or by seeking revenge.

According to Leonard Groopman and Arnold Cooper, the following have been identified by various researchers as possible factors that promote the development of NPD:[20]
  • An oversensitive temperament (personality traits) at birth.
  • Excessive admiration that is never balanced with realistic feedback.
  • Excessive praise for good behaviors or excessive criticism for bad behaviors in childhood.
  • Overindulgence and overvaluation by parents, other family members, or peers.
  • Being praised for perceived exceptional looks or abilities by adults.
  • Severe emotional abuse in childhood.
  • Unpredictable or unreliable caregiving from parents.
  • Learning manipulative behaviors from parents or peers.
  • Valued by parents as a means to regulate their own self-esteem.
Herbert Armstrong fits the category of what has been defined as an "Unprincipled Narcissist."

Unprincipled narcissist Including antisocial features.
Deficient conscience; unscrupulous, amoral, disloyal, fraudulent, deceptive, arrogant, exploitive; a con artist and charlatan; dominating, contemptuous, vindictive.
It is my critical, unofficial, unscientific, and wholly unprofessional statement and belief, based on many years of personal experience within Armstrongism, observation, analysis, co-worker letters, articles in all sorts of Media, including Pastor General Reports, The Plain Truth, The Good News, Videos, Attributions, reports from those who knew him, the Autobiographies, that Herbert Armstrong was in all ways a Pathological Unprincipled Narcissist, suffering from Narcissistic Personality Disorder, to the harm and detriment, financial, spiritual, emotional, and mental, of his victims both in his Worldwide Church of God and around the world via media, including radio and television. 

It is also my opinion that many of those who have developed their own organizational splinters using Armstrong's methodologies also display narcissistic tendencies, exacerbated by Armstrong's narcissistic personality disorder, business, and dogma. 
 
Finally, it is my opinion that those who are a part of the organizations of Armstrongism are prone to develop Narcissistic Personality Disorder, based on the teachings and doctrines of the groups that promote the agendas of Armstrongism.

Division, or Truth?



Herbert Armstrong, in the Church Purple Hymnal, in "How This Hymnal Came To Be" - the introduction of the many familiar Dwight Armstrong four part harmony songs - said the words in the title above, pertaining to why he would not allow "Christian" songs to be included in his collection of hymns for the Church. For this reason, based on his extreme prejudice and contempt for all things mainstream Christianity, he said that it is as sinful to sing a lie as it is to tell one.

Pretty potent words of blatant hypocrisy, if you ask me. How many times did we sing something about us moaning bitterly, when we weren't? Or with shame and confusion covering our faces - everyone smile!? Or "For God's Day is Now at Hand" - when it wasn't. But we sing something about "What a Friend we Have in Jesus" - apparently, that was a lie to the Church. Or, "and he walks with me, and He talks with me" - well, maybe that wasn't a lie. In our church, He was outside knocking at the door trying to get in.

How about now?

What about when the Splinters sing "Onward Christian soldiers?" How is we are not divided not a lie within the Churches of God? You bet they're divided. All of them. They can't even get together for a feast service. Not even once a year.

Or how about "How Good and How Pleasant" - for those who have those in their hymnals? Together in Unity? Really? What COG is completely united together in unity? Name one? Anyone? I'm not counting those who "play church". You know who you are.

If it REALLY is just as much of a sin to sing a lie, as it is to say a lie, as Herbert constantly proclaimed as the core of his reasoning to get his brother Dwight to write the Purple Hymnal and forever put his tunes in our heads, then you know what my opinion is? It's probably an unpopular opinion. One that might get one in hot water with a minister. Want to know what it is? It's really easy.

Don't sing the lies! Am I agreeing with HWA on this? No - I'm agreeing with the word of God on this, in my honest opinion. But I know that such a statement could never happen within a Church of God. Obedience to "the Government of God" is far more valuable then truth. The fear of the minister - that conditioning - is strong. One of the strongest forces in the mind of a Church of God member.

I might add, that if you decide to sing or not sing in a mainstream Church - in many of the mainstream churches - it's encouraged for you to worship your own way. Many times they will start the service by saying:

"Many of you today may feel like standing up, that's fine. Some of you may want to stay seated, that's fine, too. Some can come up to the altar, others can stay in their seats. Some may sing loudly, others may sit quiet and prayerfully. However you worship is between you and God as we come into his presence."

Such an attitude of personal worship between God and Man would be a rarity in the Churches of God.

So if you aren't comfortable with not singing because you'll get a target on your head from a Minister - and you don't want to SING A LIE - better yet, change the words. How about, as loudly as you can, "We are ALL divided, NOT one body, we, Not in hope in doctrine, NOT in charity". I wonder how that would go over! Oh wait! Am I causing division? Or promoting truth? What is better? Division... or truth? Read Luke 12:51 and tell me what you think about Jesus' response to such a question.

Or - there's the ol' Silent Sing Trick! Keep mouthing the words "We are not divided" but sing "We are .... divided". :P The only person who could tell? Your family next to you. But I guess this would become quite the problem if the whole church did it! Can you imagine? Everyone singing WE ARE .... DIVIDED, ...... BODY WE...... IN FAITH AND DOCTRINE.... IN CHARITY... Can you just see the Pastor's face now? Usher meeting! To the back! Pronto!


And then 45 minutes over service for a sermon on respect of authority in the Church - which trumps truth.

I'm being totally facetious here. No one's going to do any of the above. I know anyone reading this will certainly just sing the falsehoods, "We are not divided, all one body we", all while their internal thoughts are yelling "HA! HA! RIGHT! WHATEVER! ISNT THAT A LOAD OF HOOEY!"

The point of all this is simple. In the Churches of God, authority trumps truth. Lies trump truth. Appearance trumps truth. Law trumps truth. So if truth is Jesus, and Jesus is truth...

Where's Jesus?

There's a New Minister In This Here Town....




Minister simply didn't mean “Minister” in the church.

The name “Minister” - in the best way possible – meant “Sheriff”.

The fact that the minister was referred to as a “Sheriff” was mentioned many times from the pulpit in the church's later days. The church was repeatedly told that the church pastors needed to be shephards, not sheriffs. Many ministers took the position of a sheriff – acting as the gestapo, at the worst – or as a law enforcement officer, at the best. I'm not saying that they did anything inherently illegal – although some of their actions have caused some to committ illegal activities in Armstrongism in some few cases, it's been said. The ministry acted in harsh and in cruel manners to maintain the order and discipline of the church – even to teenagers.

I can remember reading a story of one particular teenager who was suspended in church for one reason or another, and decided to go back to her church before she was told, just to be harshly escorted out and berated for daring to come to church before she was supposed to. 

 

In short, ministers acted in the means of law enforcement and harsh discipline instead of acting in the manners of love. In every way, fear, discipline, and power was used as a tool for control instead of love, kindness, and mercy. Those elements of emotion were seen as “girly” or “pansy” compared to the power of the “rod of iron”, said symbolically.

While the lay member was forced in church-induced dung-piles of impoverished living, the minister enjoyed the best that life had to offer. Not only did ministers not have to pay second tithe out of their income, their car and housing were taken care of. For a time, even their utilities were covered and paid with their expense account. They lived the life of Riley while the members struggled with daily living. Of course, most ministers graduated from Ambassador College and were only trained for church ministry – so the fear that they might become disfellowshipped themselves made them subject to every command the church gave them – because they weren't good at (so they were told) anything else but ministry. If they left the church, they were told they might be “reduced” to mere manual labor – working with their hands – a type of work despised by Herbert Armstrong himself. That fear caused many ministers to become “yes-men” to their superiors, and dictators to their congregations. Their own job was on the line – along with all their perks and benefits – if he somehow messed up. 

 

The minister coming over to the house for visitation was always a dreadful thing – for if the minister came over, it was nearly certain that bad news was about to happpen. Perhaps he was told something by another member he wanted to talk over. Perhaps he saw something he didn't approve of. Perhaps he wanted to talk to you about your marriage, or your job. Maybe your child was out of line, and you were being told to take care of that better. Maybe you were being told not to talk to your extended unconverted family any more – or maybe you were told to shun your child who just left the church and became “worldly”.


Just make sure your house was perfect, and everything was in order. Make sure you hid any medicines you took in the medicine cabinet, because chances are if they went to the bathroom, they might just open up your medicine cabinet and check to see if you “had enough faith”. Make sure your magazines are put away – you wouldn't want them wondering why you subscribed to a more “worldly” type of magazine, like Fortune – you might be judged as being greedy. And hope to your God that they never came over unexpectedly – your entire perception might be changed by that one visit at not-so-good of a time.



Ministers were not ministers in the church – they were enforcement officers, and to me, appeared ready to condemn and to pounce. You did everything you could not to “tick them off” - because if you did, your chances of salvation were going downhill – and your chances of being thrown into that awful lake of fire in the future were much more “real” then you could have imagined. 

 

In fact, fear became a staple of the church. Fear of not only being disfellowshiped – but constant fear of the supernatural based on what we were taught. Fear of the devil and demons – fear of the other religions because we were taught 'every' other religion, of course besides ours, was steeped in paganism and demonism. Fear of being too close to “worldly people”. Fear of doing something wrong in the church that would “tick off” the minister. The entire concept of Armstrongism is based and rooted in control and in fear – and this was pounded on the head of mambers like a hydraulic wrecking ball hammers bricks in delapidated buildings. Coincidentally, many members, knowingly or not, became exactly that – delapidated – by the wrecking ball of the minister's ego and pride of being an all-powerful representative of the god that we served.

The one place most would never want to be in if he was angry.

Ego. Hubris. These men who were ministers really thought that they were the representatives of Jesus Christ on Earth. They weren't humble about it – they loved every second of it.

They always made sure they got the more comfortable chairs at the Feast. They always made sure that they were “roped off” from the general membership at church functions. As the general membership was set apart from the world, it seemed that the ministers viewed themselves as “set apart” from the congregation. At best, the higher in rank they were, the more unapproachable they became, it seemed.

At their college, they had their own separate faculty dining room, which, of course, was far more luxurious then the regular student dining rooms. At the Feast, they had their own ministerial luncheons – which regular members were never to attend with. Ministers were elite – and superior – and they had the massive egos to prove it. I'm not saying everyone didn't have egos – most everyone did. Yet, with a few exceptions – ministers were like an extra-strength version compared to a regular version of “Ego-nol.”



I'm not saying that there weren't a few good ministers in the group. There were. But that was the exception, and not the rule. A few were decent, and actually exemplified the role of minister. However, most were too concerned with their rule of law then they were of making lives better for their members – actually ministering to serve instead of ministering to be served, like many were accustomed to.

Truthfully, my opinion of the majority of them were ego-centered, hubris-filled, manipulative, self-absorbed jerks. That's what my opinion was – and that's how most of them acted.
